Arequipa

21-07-2026

A day devoted to visiting the White City. First stop: the city center. Take a stroll through the cobbled streets, pass under impressive arches and admire the sculpted vaults. Some of the architectural treasures are hidden behind sturdy walls, so be curious and don’t hesitate to cross the threshold. You’re sure to discover a colonial patio or a Baroque-style fountain.

The heart of the city, the Plaza de Armas is a public square in the historic center of Arequipa, home to a number of monuments worth visiting, including Arequipa Cathedral, the city gates, the Compañía de Jesús church and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Merced. In the center of the Plaza de Armas stands a bronze pool in the middle of which is Tuturutu, a large statue in the shape of an elf. According to local legend, it represents the official messenger of Inca Mayta Capac, who was petrified by a cold wave.

Then a visit to San Camilo, a large covered market where locals come to meet, bargain and buy fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. A detour to San Camilo offers a real immersion in the life of Arequipa’s inhabitants. It’s also an opportunity to sample traditional dishes or buy souvenirs of your stay in Peru.

Continue on foot for around 15 minutes to the Yanahuara viewpoint. Located right next to a church of the same name, the Yanahuara viewpoint rises to an altitude of almost 2,300 metres. The viewpoint itself features poems carved into the white stone of the arches. The Yanahuara viewpoint overlooks the entire city of Arequipa. From the top, you’ll be able to observe the interweaving of cobbled streets and the many colonial buildings that characterize the city. On the horizon, you can also see the Misti, Pichu Pichu and Chachani volcanoes.

Enjoy a demonstration of Andean and Arequipa cuisine.

The Tio Dario restaurant opens its doors (and its kitchens!) and its chef will demonstrate his talents so that you can master the best local recipes and Peru’s most popular cocktail, the Pisco Sour!

Enjoy the exceptional ambience of the restaurant’s spring garden.

Lunch included after the cooking class.

Our visit to Arequipa continues in the early afternoon with a tour of the Santa Catalina monastery, a veritable small town in the heart of the city, with its narrow streets lined with little houses coloured ochre, blue and white, its squares and fountains, a setting reminiscent of faraway Andalusia.

Walk back to the hotel after the tour.
