The ancient city of Sukhothai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the perfect embodiment of the Asian sites that have captured the imagination of explorers, young and old alike. Marvel at the magnificent Buddha statues and the beautifully carved elephants supporting an imposing stupa. However, Sukhothai should not be reduced to just this atmosphere. In fact, far beyond the beauty of its temples, it remains one of Thailand’s oldest cities and also plays a major role in the development of architecture, art, writing, and spirituality—the foundations of Thai culture.

. You will leave Sukhothai and head to Lampang.
Lampang is known for its history as an economic hub for the teak trade. In the late 19th century, wealthy merchants had large houses built, some with carved facades. We invite you to immerse yourself in this atmosphere; you’ll pass by the Louis Leonowens House and arrive at the Ratsada Phisek Bridge, from where you’ll set off on foot for a stroll through the old town along Thanon Talat Kao, lined with old wooden houses—reminders of a glorious past. The Moung Ngwe Zin Building and the Kanchanawong House are fine examples of this.
Dinner in a local restaurant.
You’ll continue on your way north of Lampang and discover the Thung Kwian Market, where you’ll find a wide variety of local products, including northern-style sausages, fried insects, spices, fruits, ceramics, textiles, and all kinds of clothing, and more.
You’ll then continue on to Chiang Mai (about a 1-hour drive), a city that many describe as the most charming in Thailand. The most important cultural center in northern Thailand boasts an impressive and diverse heritage of ancient temples: from colorful structures that shimmer in the sun to more understated beauties with earthy or rustic tones of brick and wood. The surrounding countryside is simply spectacular: Chiang Mai is also the gateway to the northern mountains, offering invigorating hikes, enigmatic elephants, and culturally intriguing ethnic minority villages.
You’ll head to Doi Suthep, the centuries-old mountain that towers over the city—one of the highest hills overlooking and watching over Chiang Mai. Doi Suthep is also one of the most spiritually significant and revered temples in the north of the country.
You’ll have the chance to listen to the monks chant—a moving experience and a true encounter with Thailand’s spiritual tradition—before watching the sunset and its equally magical play of colors at dusk from the temple’s terrace overlooking the valley.

You’ll start by heading to a hidden spot near the river where you’ll sample Northern Thai dishes while sipping a refreshing drink and watching the sun set. You’ll then head out to explore the bustling markets and pass by famous landmarks on your way to the Old City center. When you stop at the public park, you’ll see locals exercising there at the end of the day—it’s a great spot to watch people doing yoga, playing the very physical game of takraw, or playing badminton. There are also free aerobics classes open to everyone! You’ll then hop back on your songthaew, which will take you near the river where your local restaurant is located.
